False Prophets

Sometimes I have to have a bit of a grin. Recently we had a report from somewhere that Nuclear War would start in August of this year and we all had to be ready for it. And, it seems that all over the world, people are counting down to
The End Of The World

There is no doubt this world as it is now will end at some time or another, but I wonder when the false prophets will let up on their predictions?

A Prophet is one who speaks FOR God.

That's a pretty high calling! To be chosen to speak FOR God the Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth! After all He is God!

Today, people throw around "prophecies" as though they are going out of fashion. Never in my life had I heard as many as I did in the pentecostal churches.

I recall an instance when, while seated at a pentecostal church, a woman stood up and began babbling in a strange language. There was nobody to interpret, we had no idea what she was on about and yet the minister bade us all to listen to these "astonishing prophetic words".

I never did find out what they were and am still wondering many years later.

Why do people give false prophecies? Why do people stand up and babble away in strange languages? Why do they babble in strange languages anyway?!
What is behind these Revival, Word of Faith, and Pentecostal Movements?

I recall when I used to visit a woman deeply involved with Pentecostalism. She is so deeply religious it isn't natural and her prime target to be "saved" was moi at that time.

Her and a friend introduced me to Pentecostalism big time. And in those churches I saw things I never thought I'd ever see in my life.

Prophecy was rife! It seemed that everyone was a prophet!

Then there were the prophets in the big cities who used to visit. One prophesised over me and told me God wasn't going to throw the baby out with the bathwater giving me visions of nightmare quality.

What does the Bible say about prophets?

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Peter 1:21

And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth [Famine] throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Acts 11:27-28

And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle [Belt], and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

1 Samuel 10:10-11
And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

Deuteronomy 18 and Samuel 10 tells us what will happen to these false prophets. They die.

The rest show us that a prophets words happpen!

It often astonisheds me that these people who claim to be prophets continue to try to predict the end of the world when in actual fact, Jesus stated, in their well worn Bibles, that even HE did nopt know, that only GOD knew when the end would happen.

Now I really am wondering what is truly behind this pentecostal movement because what they do seems to be contradictory to God's Word.

What do you think?

It is a strange movement and only came into being about 1900 I think. I don't understand half they talk about really, just seems like words word words, many totally un understandable.
As for the false prophets, they are ridiculous. Benny Hinn is a straight fake yet people listen to him! Makes me wonder what goes on in peoples heads.

Then you tell me which church is right. Seems to me you do need salvation because if you have never experienced Jesus as we have then you are going nowhere. We talk in tongues and enjoy what we do but seems to me alot of people are caught in a time warp of the middle centuries with many churches.
Sure we pay tithes. Why not? Sure we have prophets in the church as Paul said we would in the New Testament. Seems you believe nothing. First you leave the catholic church, don't blame you for that, then you leave the Mormon church, then you leave a movement which is Biblical sound! What will please you? An old fashioned church with a pedal pushing organist?

anon, the twilight of our SELF is when we begin seeing things that are not there.

The darkness our SELF comes when we misinterpret the Bible.

Nothing but the truth will ever suit me and I do not find pentecostalism to be Biblically sound.

1/ Why no interpreters when people start babbling in 'tongues'?
It is Biblical to have INTERPRETERS!
2/ Where in the Bible does it state people can bark like dogs or roll into hysterical fits of laughter.
3/ Why do the prophets not have prophecies come true?

    A prophet is God's mouthpiece.

Where churches are concerned, I would much prefer the Home Based style but am not apposed to the medievil settings nor offended by them.

Show me where in the New Testament we folk, under the law of Grace HAVE to pay tithes.

You are dead wrong when you say I believe nothing. I believe GOD!
If He said it - I believe it. It's that simple.

Comment of a south Texas boy (old boy).

We seem overrun with self-proclaimed "'Prophets" in Houston. I think most should re-name themselves as "Profits."

My understanding is that originally (in the N.T. church)it meant "one who speaks before." The meaning has been twisted in recent times to fit personal and self serving agends,

hmnnnnn ... been wondering where their appointments came from Red!

I believe the understanding of what a prophet is should line up with the Old Testament.

Under no circumstances can we assume anything where the Bible is concerned. We cannot assume we are prophets or even that we speak in the language of angels unless it has all been verified with the Bible.

My belief is that ASSUMPTION can take the place of true annointed calling where the Gifts are concerned today.

I think that if we initiated O. T. punishment for so-called prophets whose propecies did not come about would greatly reduce the number of them running around loose.

    A :) hurrah to Simonetta...

I wonder why it is that I find more and more people from AU seeking and also challenging the false vs. the true.

Yes, if one is a true prophet, if what they say is from God, they will NEVER miss the mark.

It's sad, that observers have to suggest that most self-proclaimed prophets need to rename themselves "profits".

Sad, that if these "profits" don't repent and turn away from their wickeness, they will incur God's discipline (judgement) which IS Biblical, both in the O.T. and the N.T. The Bible says that God is the SAME yesterday, today AND forever. A stern warning to any of you out there that choose to lead any of His astray, fleece God's flock, or pursue religion as a means of gain...

That is why the Bible says to seek and read the scriptures DAILY, and to prove all things (see if anything matches up with God's Word). Biblically, we are NOT to pray to or worship any man, not even to the Holy Spirit, but to God, and to pray to and worship only God (Jesus said that, including telling us that we are to call no man "father", but only God "father".

How many across the globe now follow these celebrity evangalists vs. God??? An unknown minister or evangalist in the Bronx or some slum or even in the bush may well have many times the favor of God, than these celbrity evangalists do. Many wonder how this can be...

Remember, Satan currently has legal rights, and controls this world, including wealth. Wouldn't it be out of his caracter to not tempt and control such people with the vices of the pride of life and lusts of the flesh? He did it to Jesus, even offering Jesus all the wealth and power of the world... only if he would bow down and worship him.

Are many of these evangalists, preachers, "profits" refusing to cave in to the temptations, quoting the scriptures back to Satan and commanding him to flee, or do they cave in to the lusts and temptations?

Sadly, one of those who I knew fairly well, who still is a global tele-evangalist went from being a humble servant of God, to once see him starkly dance across the stage declaring that "it's all mine, it's all mine" (referring to material posessions) over 15 years ago. Over 7 years ago, sat in one of his seminars, hardly ever hearing a single scripture, making most motivational/get rich quick scheme speakers blush with shame, all the while bellowing out "it's all mine..." and "God told me to get all I can get before the rapture... (like he's going to get to take it with him)

Jesus is our intercessor (currently), and the Holy Spirit was sent to guide us and to comfort us. Don't see much of anything in the Bible saying we should be unruly, wild, out of control etc. when it comes to the "Gifts of the Spirit".

Regarding the gifts of the Spirit, Paul says that only 2 or 3 should prophecy if at all in an orderly manner, and even then, only if God has given the interpretation to someone. Satan's minions can just as easily babble and speak in tongues (as well as provide a glowing as well as gastly interpretation)

Jesus tells us that we will know a person by their f r u i t !!! Be wary of false wolves in sheeps clothing, false prophets that babble, say and whisper things that tickle people's ears with what they want to hear, avoiding anything that has to do with repentance and teaching us the 2/3 of the Bible that warns us about Satan's devices, treachery and snares, AND very importantly those who fleece God's flocks AND relish in the pride of life and the lust of the flesh.

There are stern warnings in the Bible about those who pursue to do such, as well as those who pursue religion as a means of gain... What? They can't have their penthouse hotel rooms, personal jets, lavish homes cars huge investment portfolios and lifestyles? Actually, if any person pursues or engages in religious activities expecting ANY pay is pursuing religion as a means of gain. A blatant rebellious act, and a hard thing to consider given the current format of most religious denominational operations.

Anyway, God warns us to be wary of such. Sadly, most "prophets", celebrity evangalists and even more and more "ministers of the Gospel" have crossed over as is decribed in the O.T. concerning Baalim. There aren't very many that choose to be God's mouthpiece in a humble manner, having a repentant and submissive heart. But for those who genuinely have such in their midst, pray for, support and encourage them and learn from their understanding and fellowship with them, but never worship them. (that's reserved for God alone)

Hang in there Simonetta, let the questions in your mind motivate you to find out what God says about such things in the Bible, worship God and God alone, and be at peace to let God deal with the mess :)

    God's Watchman
