The Doctor.
I decided to forget the spoiled images and concentrate on my life.
It was a great life. Only me to worry about and my animals. There was also a Doctor's appointment to keep the following day.
That turned into a complete shamozzle too as I had only gone up to get a repeat for a prescription and had forgotten to make another appointment to find out the results of my blood test. THAT made him a little testy.
"Why did you not come and see me?" I rolled my eyes, sighed. and leaned on his desk on one elbow and looked at him.
"You crook on me?"
"No, I am not crook on you, but when a person had a blood test it is right they should come to me and see about the results!"
"Well, Dr David said ..." he held his hand up to stop me speaking, leaned on the desk with folded arms and gazed at me firmly. I held his gaze.
"Do I look like your other Doctor?" he asked.
I stared into his black Nigerian face and thought of Dr David's face which was as white as vanilla icecream and suddenly didn't know what to say.
"DO I ?" he demanded.
I looked at him and said "Well .... there is a little bit of difference."
His black eyes seemed to pierce right through me. I thought of David's blue eyes.
"You are now MY patient, you will do as I say." The words were kindly meant but ...
"Why didn't you come up?"
"Because I knew my blood test was alright?"
He grinned.
"You are incorrigible."
"I know." came my swift reply.
"Your blood is not alright."
" What's wrong with it!" I sat bolt upright and glared at him. "It's bluer than the queen's."
"Your cholesterol is up."
"I ate two blocks of chocolate before they took the test." The words came quickly.
"You did fast or you didn't?"
" I fasted, but on the day before the fast I ate two blocks of chocolate."
He heaved a sigh. "Big or little?"
"Little, they were cheap."
He scratched his chin, then his head.
"Well, it is up, so, you are going to eat this diet."
"Diet?" I echoed in a squeaky whisper.
"Yes, I want you to take this home and follow it to the last words, AND, I am only doing this to prevent a war like we had last time about you having a blood test." He passed the yellow paper to me, I nearly passed out when I read it. By the time this was over I'd look as if I'd been in a Japanese POW camp.
"Now, I want to take your blood pressure."
I didn't roll my sleeve up. "Come on, roll it up." he said.
"I never had to with Dr David."
"Your BP has been taken with sleeve down?!"
"Always."
"Then there has been no correct reading!"
I rolled my sleeve up and looked at him. "Satified?"
"Very."
He started pumping on the BP machine looking very intense. "What..." I began.
"shhhhhh"
He was staring at the reading.
Soon, he put it away. "It's waaaay up!"
"Huh?!" This new Doctor was a menace.
"It's 170. now... what to do ... what to do ... what to do....."
"Just let me out of here and I'll be happy!" I cried.
"Shhh ... I am thinking."
Bloody hell! His bloodpressure would be up too if he'd been kissed the day before like I had been but I wasn't going to tell him that!
"Look, I can take Aspirin......"
"Aspirin, that's it, you will take prescribed Aspirin."
Great, prescribed Aspirin and a diet to boot. What a lovely man he was, I sat in awe of his generosity and awaited his next little gift.
Out came the prescriptions, out came his words. "You are NOT getting a repeat on that medication because I want to see YOU IN A FORTNIGHT."
"I hate Doctors." I mumbled.
"I heard that."
"Just when I was going to tell you I had a little problem." I gave him a quick fake grin.
"Problem?! You are sick?!"
I stared at him in amazement. He had just told me my BP was up, my cholesterol was up and he asked if I were sick? And he was my Doctor?
"Nope ... never sick. Just get cramps in the right foot from that terrible medication. I need some Quinine tablets."
Sudddenly he was as gentle as a lamb. "We don't give Quinine tablets anymore as it affects the bone marrow. What to do is this. Go to the Supermarket and buy some Lemon Bitters, you will look at the label and see 'quinine' written on the ingredients. It is a very light amount in it but enough to stop the side effect of cramps. Drink a little bottle a day if you like! It won't harm you.
"A soft drink?!"
"Yes, a soft drink. You will like that medication."
"No probs! Can I get out of here now?"
"Yes, follow that diet, and I want you back here in a fortnight.
"Thankyou Doctor." And, I was gone faster than a bullet.
I took the script into the Chemist, came home and took a Disprin for the blood pressure. Then remembered he'd said something about Aspirin.
Back I fled to the Chemist. "Is there a prescription in there for Aspirin?"
Kelly had a look and said there was and asked if I wanted it filled. I grinned at her and noded yes.
It was all too much to take this being kissed in the crater of an extinct volcano, giving photography lessons, seeing strange lights on my photo's, then going through all that with the Doctor. Struth ..... If he'd been through what I'd been through his BP would have been far higher than mine.
And, if he'd been thinking and had known me better he'd have known it had shot up when he mentioned that word 'diet'!
